Confirm the specification before you look for a supplier
Most buying mistakes happen before a supplier is even contacted. The specification is incomplete, so any quote can be made to look competitive. Fix the specification first and the shortlist narrows itself.
- Material grade — PE100 or PE100RC. "HDPE" alone is not a grade.
- Pressure class — SDR or PN, stated with the reference standard.
- Diameter — outside diameter in millimetres, not nominal only.
- Application standard — ISO 4427 for water, ISO 4437 for gas.
- Colour and stripe — blue for potable, yellow for gas, as specified.
Choose the buying route deliberately
There are three ways to buy HDPE in Abu Dhabi, and each one carries a different risk profile. The cheapest route to place an order is rarely the cheapest route to complete a project.
- Route A — Broker: order taken, stock sourced afterwards. Lowest quoted price, highest schedule risk.

Verify the stock, not the promise
Stock is a physical fact, not a service level. A supplier either has the fitting on a rack in the emirate or they do not. Everything else — lead times, container arrivals, factory schedules — is a description of not having it.
- Ask for a specific item in a specific size and pressure class, today.
- Ask whether the depot can be inspected, and go and see it.
- Ask how partial orders are handled when one line is unavailable.
- Ask what the emergency process is for a site stoppage after hours.
Confirm the documents before the material arrives
Inspection is a document event as much as a material event. A perfect pipe without a certificate is a pipe under question. Confirm the paperwork sequence at order stage, not on the morning of the inspection.
- Mill test certificate naming the actual product, grade and SDR.
- Batch traceability record linking delivered items to production.
- Fusion parameter sheet for the fitting and pipe combination supplied.
- Authority approval reference for the relevant emirate.
Schedule the delivery against the programme
The last waypoint is timing. A delivery is not complete when it leaves the depot — it is complete when it arrives at the right site, at the right time, with the right paperwork.
- Confirm the cut-off time for same-day dispatch in your emirate.
- Confirm whether partial deliveries will split the programme.
- Confirm who signs, and that the delivery note maps to the batch records.
